Mandarin Chinese has a reputation of being a hard language to learn. And it really does take a lot of work. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with it.

Let’s take a look at some cool videos of foreigners learning and applying the language on the world stage!

Kevin Michael Rudd was the 26th Prime Minister of Australia from 2007 to 2010.

We can see former Prime Minister Rudd addressing the Chinese President Hu Jintao in this event. Watch him invite the president to see the sights of Australia and a request for a panda?

Catch it here!

He is best known as being the weather anchor on NBC’s Today.

In this video, the amiable Al is in China to cover the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and tries his luck with learning Mandarin Chinese.

Watch out for his “TOUGH” exam.

3. JOHN HUNTSMAN with Stephen Colbert

On May 16, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Jon Huntsman to serve as the United States Ambassador to China , noting his experience in the region and proficiency in Mandarin Chinese.

He is currently running for the Republican Party’s nomination for the U.S. Presidential race. He is not doing well on the polls lately and wanted to get the “Colbert Bump”.

See his political offer to Stephen Colbert!

I hope you enjoyed these videos. Learning Mandarin Chinese is definitely challenging but you could always put a fun spin to it while learning and apparently use it as political leverage as well.

These videos are light and fun but let’s not forget two of the most proficient speakers from the videos are highly accomplished and well traveled statesmen.

One was a former prime minister (Rudd) and the other was an accomplished governor of the state of  Utah (Huntsman) who is currently running for the U.S. presidency.

I am not saying they achieved all these success because of their proficiency in speaking Mandarin Chinese but as with any skill, it has opened up plenty of opportunities for them that might otherwise have not been there. Just like our featured Fortune Earners.

Well I do hope you enjoyed the video and I’d would appreciate if you could drop a COMMENT in the box below to share what you thought of the post.

Hope to hear from you!

  1. It’s definitely amazing how being able to speak fluent Mandarin Chinese can spruce up anyone’s talents, may it be a politician giving a speech, a candidate running for office, an executive in a business meeting or even a student in a recital. It’s interesting to see these people in action in these 3 videos. Good work Allan! 🙂

    • Thanks for the kind words. Yes indeed it can. And you could really have fun doing it. You will also expand your perspective by learning a different culture and on the flip side, you will also have a new found appreciation for your own language. 🙂
